WE HAVE BEEN COMING TO THE RACES FOR ABOUT 5 YEARS NOW AND I JUST GOT A WAGON AND A SET OF MULES. I AM NOT INTERESTED IN RACEING BUT I THOUHGT YOU GUYS HAD A DRIVING CONTEST BEFORE THE RACES CAN ANYONE ENTER THAT OR HOW DOES THAT WORK
#1 – MIKE JONES – 07/06/2007 – 10:25
Another race year done!
July 6th, 2007 at 6:23 pm
Hey Mike, We are not having the driving contest this year. It was a maneuvering competition, and we did it as part of the preshow activities. We welcome you to bring your team and wagon and drive in the parade of wagons on Saturday and Sunday.

would like information on camping and where horses are kept, this is our first time to attend this year do we need to make reservations for a camp site or what do you suggest?
ronnie
July 9th, 2007 at 8:45 pm
You do not need to make reservations. People camp in the same spot year after year. They have their spots marked with a green camp sign. They are required to be in their camps no later than Wednesday, August 30. Campers with horses come through the West Gate, which is off Hwy. 95 just outside of Clinton. Ask the guys at the gate to point you in a direction of where there are spots available. There is nearly 500 acres to camp on–some is more desirable than others, but there is plenty of room.
July 11th, 2007 at 11:04 am
What is the best spot to camp to be able to get to all the shows and events, we have an electric golf cart we would like to ride to the events so we dont have to be real close… this will be our first time and are realy excited to come..
see ya soon.
Jim

Sorry, but one more newbie question… do we buy our tickets for the event when we arrive or do we need to order them first? Also does the tickets get us in all the events and concerts as well?
thanks again…
Jim
July 11th, 2007 at 7:03 pm
No, you will do that when you come. If you are camping with horses/mules, you will pay for the number of days you are attending–for example, if you come in on Wednesday, you will pay for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday ($105 for adults). You will get an armband that you wear, and it will get you into any event that is going on that day. If for some reason you have to leave early, if you go to the West Gate, they will remove your armband and refund the days that you can’t attend. Hope this helps!

Even if you do not camp with horses/mules, you can buy an armband. If you are planning to camp WITHOUT equine, camp “on top”. It is at the main entrance off Hwy. 65. It is primitive camping. You are welcome to use a golf cart in that area, but not in the area where horses are. We have a parking area for your carts close to the evening shows and chuckwagon race viewing area.

Hello from Wisconsin!
In 2005 we were down for the Chuckwagon Races and really enjoyed the experience. We’ve shared our excitement with several of our friend and would now like to come down again with a few more people. We would not be bringing horses with us this year. I am wondering if the camping at the top of the hill required reservations or is a that first come first serve? We would be bringing down two RV’s and possible a golf cart. If it is reservations only do you still have campsites available?
Sincerely,
Jo Ann
July 16th, 2007 at 7:05 pm
We do not have any openings for spots with electricity and water left. However, there is plenty of room for primitive camping. If you have a generator, you are more than welcome to use it. You do not need to make reservations for the primitive sites. You can also bring your golf cart in that part too. If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Hi Peggy,
Sorry to bother you again!! What is the charge for the primitive camping at the top?
Jo Ann
July 17th, 2007 at 8:03 am
There is no charge for the primitive camping–just your admission to the grounds.
Peggy
July 17th, 2007 at 6:54 pm
Hello Again…
Is there a price for the arm band that is good for the weekend? if so what is the price for adults and kids.
thanks again.
Jim
July 17th, 2007 at 7:33 pm
You can buy an armband for the weekend. Prices are $25 each day Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Any other day that you are here is $15 each day. Children are one-half that price. When you get to the gate, tell them you want to buy an armband, and they will take care of you.
July 19th, 2007 at 8:50 am
Hi Peggy,
I know you mentioned camping up top is primitive but are there porta potties distributed around that field? One more question are there public showers anywhere on the grounds? Just want to make provisions and pack the right things if not!!
Thank you,
Jo Ann
July 19th, 2007 at 9:56 am
We do have portapotties–not right in that field, but close by. There are also cold-water showers near the camping area. They are not too bad in the middle of the day when it is hot, but we do hear some screams early in the morning!!!

Dear Peggy & Dan
2006 was my first year to attend the races. I had such a wonderful experince. I so enjoyed comming up & seeing John Connley in concert, the next day we rode our horse to the races and sat by the tree, this was where I experieced bronc fanningfor the first time, as that particular horse came all the way across the field and landed in front of the tree, right in front of me!!!!!!! WOW!!!!! This just proves there is a good time to be had by all, but we must all be careful and aware of our surroundings. I just wanted to say thank you for a wonderful weekend and hope to see you this year as well.
Thanks,
Gena from Harrison, AR
July 21st, 2007 at 9:27 am
Hi Gena,
Thanks for the good words! We are so glad that you enjoyed yourself last year and that you will be with us again this year. We know you have a choice of where to spend your Labor Day Weekend, and we are so happy that you are going to spend it with us.
Dan and Peggy
July 25th, 2007 at 9:38 pm
I just wanted to add to Gena’s story… Ive lost track.. this will be my 12th or 13th year…I started with one day and was hooked.. now its 10 days of ??? for me..wonderful..each day brings something new.. back to Gena..Ive had some WOW’s with the bronc fanning.. and for you and anyone else new.. the rounding up of the horses and cattle is an experience youll never forget, if you come that early.. And the trail ride to town… always a blast.. never know what to expect there.. I will add to that one though.. stay with the ride..very easy to get lost coming back alone.
I could go on for hours but… see ya all in few weeks..
July 28th, 2007 at 10:42 am
I just want to say that Dan and Peggy are the nicest people. no matter how busy they are, they always stop to say hello. This will be my 7th year. we plan all year long for this. Each year keeps getting better and better. Thank You Teresea-Paris,ar
July 29th, 2007 at 1:41 pm
This will be our second year to attend and we’ve turned it into a family gathering. You’ve done a great job putting everything together and keeping it all so simple and organized for attendees. Couple of questions: What is the admission for 2yr. old and under? Also, we noticed some people setting up collapsible shade tent awning things on top of the hill where you view the races (right beside the aphalt walkway), which also reserved their viewing spot each day. When would you recommend getting there to set up one of these things to reserve our spot to watch the races. We have 3 two year olds and this would be ideal for us. Thanks, we can’t wait to get there!!
Kari
July 29th, 2007 at 3:50 pm
Oh, my gosh! Three 2-year olds! You deserve a medal!!! There is no charge for children under school age. Most people who set up the awnings do it on Friday morning before the races. One thing, though, be sure to look behind you when you put up an umbrella or a tarp to make sure that if someone is going to sit behind you that you don’t block his/her view.
Thanks,
Peggy

Rusty is the official starter for the races. I do not know John, but I do know that Rusty has a brother. I don’t know what his name is though.

My friend Dennis Clevenger and I love racing in the Snowy River Eveny each year and we’re really looking forward to it again this year. I’d been talking it over with some of the other racers and we were wondering if before the race we could go over which side of the trees and barrels to run too, as well as what parts of the river; as quite a few racers got turned around and/or disqualified last year! We can’t wait to see you all again, and are looking forward to bringing some first timers along with us, Best Wishes, Maggie Lange
August 7th, 2007 at 12:31 pm
is there a name or contact for the chuckwagon assoc I can come see when I get there? I have some contacts over here in west Tn that would like to put on a annual race. The land is not a problem and is located between Nashville and Memphis. you can use my e-mail to send it if you would like instaed of posting on here…
thanks again..
Jim
August 7th, 2007 at 8:05 pm
Hi Maggie,
What day are you coming? We’ll try to have one of the officials meet with you and try to answer your questions. As far as the barrels, stay on the outside of the barrels and on the right side of the tree at the finish line. There will be sponsors banners before the tree–stay on the outside of the banners. We will have personnel watching the river–just stay in the middle–not on the banks–but, again, if you want someone to go over it with you on the track, give us some advance notice so we can have someone meet you. You know, we are pretty hard to catch up with once things get rolling. Hope this helps.
August 7th, 2007 at 8:07 pm
Hi Jim,
There is an Arkansas Chuckwagon Racing Association. I THINK their website is acwra.com, but I am not completely sure. You can probably do a web search and find it though. They should have their officers names, addresses, and phone numbers listed there. If not, please contact me, and I’ll try to get you in touch with someone.

Dear Dan and Peggy
I have been attending the races for the past 18 years,
and always had my camping spot till 2005, we always got there on Wed afternoon, but our campsite had someone else in it and they didn’t want to move, so what do you do in this instance. Those treaspassers
were first time campers but yet they got my spot.
The first time I camped on that hill I was the only one there. Is it more impoirtant to get first timers than year after year campers. I spend lots of dollars on coggins, gas, groceries, time off from work, and I really don’t want to hear “just make it work” and let someone else have my spot. I go to a great deal of trouble and expence each year just to get to be at the races because it is such an enjoyment to me. But the last thing I want is to be hasseled by a newcommer and not be backed up by the Bar OF. I have about twenty friends who have joined me over the years in camping and watching the races and I always get there in time to preserve spots for us all. So when A new commer moves in on us it is a problem.
Last year I came to you with this and you said if I had a problem you’d be happy to refund my admission.
Well admission is only part of the expence to get there. And I really don’t want to turn around and drive home after so much work to get there. So what is
the answer to our problem. Will you honer or not people who came first???
August 12th, 2007 at 8:22 am
Hi Rick,
Sorry you have had camping problems. The rules of the ranch that have been posted in the program for the past several years state that someone from your camp must be in that camp by Thursday to hold that spot. This year, however, as was printed in the newsletter, we have moved that day up to WEDNESDAY. We have so many people starting to come in and stay from opening day on Saturday that we felt it was necessary to move the date to hold a permanent spot to Wednesday.
We do appreciate the folks who have been faithful attendees year after year. We know that you have a choice of where to spend your Labor Day Weekend, and we are always happy when people choose to spend it with us. However, it is not fair to ask someone who comes in on opening day to stay out in the middle of the field when there are more desirable spots that someone is only going to use for the final weekend.

thanks peggy I found the number for the arkansas team and will give them a call… the hope is we can get a race over here in west Tn.. I cant say who it is that wants one until I can get some names on who to call. but the person really does things right over here and hope to also have an anual race each year as well and they have great horse stables and camping for a lot of folks… thanks again and I will keep you posted.. feel free to give any contacts you have my e-mail to drop me a line.
thanks again and see ya soon.

Good Morning Peggy
We were aware of the Wed deadline for someone to be in your camp, and we have always been there by early afternoon on Wed. That is the only reason we said anything about our spot we thought it would be available to us till Wed afternoon.
Thanks
August 15th, 2007 at 3:28 pm
Hi there,
I have been coming to the races for 13 years now and love them and is a main reason I bought a farm and horses 10 years ago. I think you all have done a great job! I had someone ask me a question and I think it is on several folks mind….Is there anyway to consider moving the races back a month or to later in the day due to the rising temperatures? I know several folks this year that are not coming because of the hotter conditions but we love the whole event. Just a thought. Thanks, Laura
August 15th, 2007 at 3:40 pm
In a addition to the high temperatures. I am very concerned for the animals. I wish you would consider racing early in the morning or late evening. There probably would be alot more people come if you would consider moving the event back a month or so.
Thanks
Teresa
August 16th, 2007 at 4:05 pm
Ha Dan, we have been enjoying your event for 9 yrs. and plan on several more. We have a couple of teams and don’t have the ( you know whats to race ) but enjoy the hitching the wagon and fellowshiping with folks in the evenings. I wish there was a competive driveing for the the reg. guy. maybe during the morning in you covered barn. we could do a driveing thru logs , pick up a sack of cans off a 55 gal. drum and deliver it to an other drum without getting out of the wagon. we could drive thru a couple of cones with out knocking them over. park your wagon on the fence, fan your team gee and haw . ect. sure would be fun . tks. Dan, by the way for better or worse we camp with Eddie Pratt. tks again Rusty Harris
August 16th, 2007 at 6:36 pm
Oh, my gosh! You sure camp with a rough bunch!!!
We had a wagon maneuvering as a pre-show last year and the year before, but we will certainly talk it over about having something at the arena for our people with wagons.
See you soon!
August 18th, 2007 at 6:37 pm
HELLO PEGGY LOOKING FORWARD TO THE WEEK WE THINK ABOUT AND PLAN ALL YEAR FOR THIS VACATION I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THERE IS A PHONE NUMBER I CAN GET FOR THE PORTA POTTYS ON SNOWY RIVER HILL WOULD LIKE TO CONTACT THEM THANKS AND SEE YALL SATURDAY.
August 18th, 2007 at 7:08 pm
The cutoff date was August 15, but the folks who are doing the portapotties for the campers will have an office set up by the arena before and during the races. You can go by there and tell them where you are camped, and they will take one up to you.
Next year, if you will contact us before August 15 and tell us where you camp, we’ll have you on the list.
Thanks, and see you soon.
August 19th, 2007 at 2:56 am
Peggy,
This will be my first year to attend, but from what I hear this is the place to be! Will I have a hard time finding a campsite for me and my 2 horses? And is there a list of ranch rules somewhere I can aquire? Need to know such things as having campfires, buildng portable pens for the horses, and such. Plan on being at the gates when they open @ 8 a.m. because I can’t wait to start enjoying the whole shabang!
Thanks,
Ron
August 19th, 2007 at 9:27 am
Hi Ron,
No, you won’t have any trouble finding a spot to camp. However, some spots are reserved from year to year. They will be marked with a green camp sign, and you’ll be able to tell also, because most of them will have already come in and mowed, put up panels, campers, etc. When you get your armband for the week, you will also receive a program which lists all the ranch rules, which aren’t very many–most of them are just courtesy rules–no loud music after 12, no glass bottles, take your trash with you when you leave, etc. You are welcome to build camp fires (unless the county is under a burn ban), but we ask that you move your rocks back to a spot where the bush hogs won’t run over them.
You will have a great time.
August 20th, 2007 at 11:27 am
Dan and Peggy,
I am sure you get lots and lots of fan mail but I can’t resist sending my own. I came 5 years ago for 1 day, without my husband and kids for the first time not knowing what to expect. I came by myself and met some friends because I wasn’t sure my family could handle the “roughin it” part. I loved it so much that I forced my family to come the next year for 3 days and we have been hooked ever since. We plan all year for this week and have recruited every one who will get still long enough to listen to us go on and on about the races. We refer to it as “Woodstock for Horse Lovers” and we tell every one that you just can’t understand until you come because there is no way to cover everything going on. What I enjoy the most is that we get a chance to just hang out, ride the horses, get tons of entertainment (some that is a little x-rated), meet new people, ect., ect. No-one cares if you shower daily, have make up on, what clothes you are wearing, or what kind of vehicle you drive. I have been serenaded at my campsite, saw a country version of Lady Godiva, seen more crashes than Nascar could provide, eaten at strangers campsites, was introduces to “Henry” the smallest cart pony with purple hair I have ever seen, ridden thru irrigation sprinklers (that were on), had a debate on Horses vs. Mules, watched the fastest horse shoers around, danced in a covered barn on a dirt floor and that was just in one day! Thank you for giving us the best vacation ever, even if it takes me two weeks to recover!!! See you again this year (we are up to a full week now and 7 other families coming along!) Elsie—Quinton, Ok
August 20th, 2007 at 7:04 pm
Well, Elsie, I think you did a pretty good job describing the chuckwagon races!
We are SO glad you and your family have such a good time. You could be the Oklahoma Ambassador for chuckwagon races!!
Thank you for such a nice letter. It has made my day.
August 20th, 2007 at 8:10 pm
Hello,
I am at a show in MS and was talking to a few guys about saddles and such, one of them was telling me about the races, this sounds like so much fun I will make it a priority to visit in the near future.
My question is ” Do you have venders, and if so I would like some info on becoming one.
After reading your blogs I know you are doing a great job so keep up the good work and I will see you in the near future!

Hi Angela,
If you will e-mail us around the middle of May next year, we’ll send you a vendor application. Or you can call 501 745 8407 and we’ll “snail mail” you one!
August 21st, 2007 at 8:40 am
We do have the Oklahoma Land Rush race, which is for ponies and mules 46″ and under. Were you thinking of a saddle horse race for minis?
August 27th, 2007 at 12:28 pm
We paid for two primitive sites over at Southfork… are we going to be able to get our rig out on Sunday morning?? or will we need lifeflight??
August 27th, 2007 at 8:20 pm
Since I don’t know where on Southfork you are camping, I’m not sure which gate you will exit, but I would assume that you will be able to exit through one of their gates onto Hwy. 95. If not, there shouldn’t be any problems with driving out through the West Gate.
August 28th, 2007 at 8:54 am
Hello, my family has never been there and I have a couple of questions. Our horse trailer is 42 ft long and we pull it with a semi. Is there room for us to get in there and camp? We would really like to go on the trail rides, are there signs were to meet up at, and is there a trail leader? I am taking my 5 yr old so I want it to be safe for her as well.
Thanks
Teresa
August 28th, 2007 at 8:56 am
P.S. We would arrive around 8pm Friday night, will there be someone to tell us were to go?
tks
Teresa
August 28th, 2007 at 9:15 pm
Hi Teresa,
You will probably want to camp at Buffalo Rock, which is about a mile up the road from the West Gate where you will check in. It is very level there, and you shouldn’t have any trouble getting your rig in there. Once you get in and get set up, it’s about 1/2 mile through the woods to the upper end of the ranch where the races are held.
You’ll get a program with the schedule of events–but the trail rides over the weekend leave at 9 a.m. at the red barn in the bottoms. There’s a map in the program, or you can just ask somebody where the red barn is, and they can tell you. The trails they ride on Saturday and Sunday are easy rides–I don’t think your 5-year old will have any trouble. Doyle Scroggins is the trail boss, and he could tell you if he thought there might be problems for her. There will be somebody at the West Gate 24 hours, and they will be more than happy to show you how to get to the Buffalo Rock.
We’re glad you’re coming. We already have a big crowd here, and everyone seems to be having a good time.
August 28th, 2007 at 11:13 pm
Hi Peggy
Do you accept credit cards at the gate for admissions or do we need to bring cash? We are looking forward to another great race weekend! See you soon!
Gale
August 29th, 2007 at 6:56 am
No, we cannot accept credit cards–we are not set up for them yet.
Thanks.
August 29th, 2007 at 11:03 am
Well we have been going to another large trail ride in Mo. for awhile now and this looks pretty cool too. Most of our group doesn’t have generators though. How early can we reserve electric sites? Are there any meals included? Is there a restaurant nearby to get some if not? What would be the total admission for one adult for the week? How much are electric sites? primitive sites? Sorry for all the questions, I couldn’t find anywhere on the site that answered them.

August 29th, 2007 at 11:09 am
I also noticed some people asking about earlier date possibilities. Ever though about having more than one a year?
Shandra
August 29th, 2007 at 11:17 am
What are the dances like at night? About how many people are there?
August 29th, 2007 at 2:55 pm
To the above poster! I thought I would answer your question since I know Dan and Peggy both are running around like mad this week. The dances are on top of the bluff at the saloon and then there is one on the bottom at the arena.
I just wanted to say I have been going to the chuckwagon races for 23 years now. Last year was my first year not to go only becasue I had a newborn at the time. I plan on coming up on Saturday for a “mommy’s day out” my first in thirteen months! And if the dust isnt near as bad I plan on bringing my little man who would loveeee all of the horses and excitement on Sunday! I just wanted to let all of you know who are “thinking” about coming you SO SHOULD! Its so much fun… See ya’ll saturday!!!
August 29th, 2007 at 7:09 pm
I’ll try to answer as many questions as I can now–I may not be able to reply for the next couple of days. Right now, T. Graham Brown’s band is in my kitchen eating supper!!!
If you bring horses, it is ALL primitive–there are no sites with electricity. If you don’t bring horses, the earliest you can reserve a spot with electricity and water is July 5. We give the people who were here this year until then to let us know if they are coming back. We usually have about 15 openings each year.
There is no fee for the primitive spots–your admission to the grounds covers everything.
Meals are not included–but there are vendors set up throughout the week, and there are several restaurants in town–about 3 miles from the ranch.
And, no, we haven’t ever thought about more than one wagon race per year–one is enough!
Tammy, the dances are pretty full. The Saturday night dance in the bottoms is kind of like a bar kind of dance–I wouldn’t bring young children to that one-the ones we have on top are more family-oriented.
Hope this helps. Like I said, it might be a while until you hear from me.
Peggy

September 3rd, 2007 at 11:45 am
We first read about the Chuckwagon Races in Western Horseman Magazine back in the mid-1990’s. We thought it sounded like a good time…drove down in 1996…and have gone every year since! Eleven years of fine people, fast racing, and good times. Our good friend from southern Louisiana meets us in Clinton each year…we never even consider going anywhere else for Labor Day weekend! When we bring more friends with us from Kansas, they’re always impressed with the friendliness and honesty of the people of Clinton and at the races…how many other events can say that? The concerts are always good, and the race events run smoothly…even when it rained one year we had a great time! Thank you for inviting people onto your ranch for such a fine event…we’ll be there every year until we drop…we only wish we were 20 years younger so we could enter up!
September 3rd, 2007 at 5:24 pm
Hi everybody! We’re so glad that you all had a great time at the races this year. Everyone we saw throughout the week had a big smile on his/her face.
We’ll have the final results up and running shortly.
Again, to all who came and spent their Labor Day Weekend with us, we sincerely hope you had a good time. What started out 22 years ago as a small gathering for a few friends has grown into a very large gathering of many, many friends.
We’ll be cleaning and putting up things for the next few weeks, then we’ll start planning for 2008!
Thanks again,
Dan and Peggy

Dear Dan, Peggy and Family
This was my first year at the Chuckwagon Races,,in my circle of friends, I tell them it is the Cowboy Sturgis…hehe
We had such a great time. I had moved back to Missouri from Louisana, and a group of my friends down there, had come up and I went down.. met in the middle…and had some good ole coonass cowboy fun..
I could not believe the races, the excitement the thrills and spills.. Nascar dont have Jack on you all. That was just unreal..
By the time Sunday rolled around I was wore out, and wanted to go home, horses had cussed me all day, and they wanted to go too, and in my haste to beat the traffic I forgot to sign up as a permanant camper.. I do plan on returning, but guess I will just squat where I find an open space.
Once again, THANK YOU so much for opening your world to everyone, so that they can come and experience an event that is not everwhere. And like I said,
I will see ya next year!!
P.S. I do agree with some other posters, about maybe moving it back a month, the heat was almost unbearable, and I know a lot of horses had problems with it.

GOOD NEWS!!! I just talked with Matt Gardner’s mother. He is the outrider for the Farmers Insurance Group who was injured Sunday in the Classic Division. His mom tells me that he is out of the hospital, has three fractures in his nose, two black eyes, and many bruises and scratches. We are so thankful his injuries were not any more serious. His family asked me to tell everyone who has called either them or us here at the ranch how thankful they are for your concern and your prayers. The other two guys on that team are also bruised and banged up, but they are tough cowboys.
September 4th, 2007 at 9:58 am
Hello, First of all we want you all to know that the races were great as usual this year. We have a very good time as we have had for the last several years that we have been coming.
We are concerned about the condition of the guy that was hurt so badly in Sunday’s race. Could we find out how he is doing. We are still praying for his complete recovery and are trusting that the news will be good. Thank you, Gwen and Stever Spencer

Just a quick comment on a personal feeling I have. I truely enjoyed the races and suspense of each and everyone, and I know how the excitement can get new comers into buying that wagon and jumping on a horse to run the Snowy River, or run in the Classic. But I would really like to see a Very IN THE OPEN WARNING, about the dangers of these races. I realize they take their fate in their own hands, But I just dont think there is enough info on this page to warn of the tragedy that can come of a person or a mule or horse. Once again, did enjoy the show….

I just wanted to say how much I enjoy the week at the Chuckwagon races!! I have been coming for 9 years. THANKS Dan and Peggy for opening your home to all us cowpokes. It’s so much fun, and there is no way to describe it to all the folks back home in Natchez, MS. You always have something going on and there is no way to get bored. I come alone, but never feel alone while there. Thanks again, I had a wonderful time as always!!!

dan and peggy
what a great year we had a blast a blast as always except for being really dusty couldn’t have been any better i have read some of the comments about changing the date i guess these people wasn’t around in july or early august when it was 106 in the shade i would like to know the name of the flag song you played while presenting the flags on the track
thanks again
see you next year
September 5th, 2007 at 5:44 pm
95 or 106, hot is hot.. hehehe
September 5th, 2007 at 7:36 pm
The song is from a group called the Sons of the Tennessee. It is called “She’s More Than Just Another Flag.” They are three guys that ride palomino horses while they sing and play guitars. Their website is http://www.sonsoftennessee.com You can order their CDs on-line.
I know that some people feel we should move the races up or back, but Labor Day Weekend is special to Dan and me. We had our first date on Labor Day Weekend, and our first wagon race was kind of a reception for our wedding, so we CAN’T change it.
Junior Thomas, who wrote “The Great Wagon Race” song that plays on our homepage says, “if you’re gonna enter, you’d better be tough.” Well, you have to be pretty tough just to come watch!!!
September 5th, 2007 at 10:03 pm
Thanks for the info on the song. I think Labor day weekend is great it works out great for my family. I just commented on the change because i read that some was concerned about the heat on hte animals. but like the person said on another comment hot is hot.
thanks again

I competed in the snowy river race this year and Nicole Hall did not return to race on the third day. I heard that she was in a terrible accident on Saturday during the race and I was hoping you could let me know how Nicole is doing. Thanks alot!
September 7th, 2007 at 7:40 am
I spoke with her husband one night this week. She is out of the hospital and is really sore and bruised, but he said that she was in good spirits. He also said that she might enter the Snowy River Race again next year.

Here is a link to the pictures I took this year… go check them out!!!
Dan, Peggy,
I would like to say thank you on behalf of the TNT team, for another wonderful year! I really enjoyed running in the match races this year!!! Oh and tell Dan thanks for changing the course Sunday, I don’t think I could have handled watching everyone fall again and then trying to get MY nerve up to run! LOL My boyfriend STILL has a knot on his head from trying to plow the ground! Eventhough I still enjoyed doing it and I hope you plan on having them again next year! I would really love to run again!
Thanks,
Amanda

Wow! Amanda, you sure took some good pictures. I would like to forward some of these on to our printer for possible use in the program for next year, if it is o.k. with you. Some of the bronc fanning pictures make Dan and me want to get back into the bucking horse breeding business again! We are planning on the match horse race again next year as part of the preshow. We think there will be a lot more entries next year. Thanks for coming and being a part of this year’s races.
September 8th, 2007 at 2:15 pm

Guys,
Had a great time at the races this year. I know several people had accidents during the races, but I can’t seem to find any info or their condition. Is it possible to post updates on the injured, both human and equine?
September 19th, 2007 at 8:53 pm
Hi everybody. Check out this website: sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/index Sam Eifling from ESPN Outdoors came to the races this year and did a story and photos. We think he did a pretty good job telling what went on. Sam and I went through the pictures and did the best we could to name everybody (and spell their names correctly). BUT, if we didn’t, and you want to contact him directly, he said he would be glad to make corrections. His e-mail address is sam.eifling@mail.jmoutdoorscom
Hope you enjoy the story and the pictures.

ihave been at the races for the past eight years and they just keep getting better. i was wondering if you could tell me the name of the woman who was singing before the bellamy brothers came on? i really liked one of the songs she was singing and i am trying to figure out the name of it, plus we own a tavern and i was hoping to get her to come play one night. thanks, i can’t wait til next year
September 22nd, 2007 at 6:29 pm
Her name is Gwen Bradley. She is about 16 years old, and the daughter of Scott and Kim Bradley of Shirley, Arkansas. She has won lots of awards in various talent shows. You might contact her parents to see if this is something they would be interested in.
September 23rd, 2007 at 7:12 pm
Thank you very much. I will call them and find out. She has a great voice.

Hey Peggy. Shawn and I really enjoyed the Cowboy Gathering in Fort Worth. We were thinking about trying to get something like that together here in this area and wondered if you guys might be interested! You have a perfect place to set up chuckwagon camps and have a cooking competition and then have poetry and music all day long. You could do it on a Friday and Saturday or even just do an all day Saturday event. Maybe even a ranch rodeo to finish out the night. Shawn would love to perform and he knows Glenn Orlen in Mt. View, he travels to Elko, Nevada and out west performing at Cowboy Gatherings. Just an idea!
Thanks, Denise Burgess

Peggy I posted some pictures on your “Your Photos” site. I hope everyone enjoys them because I enjoyed taking them. I went back to 2004 on some of them. I hope no one minds a little trip to the past. More pictures can be viewed at our website http://www.spurcreekcattleco.com. Pictures on my website are not blocked so people can make copies of their pictures for free. Thank ya’ll for having this every year because so many enjoy it. People laugh at me when I tell them where we spend vacation every year but this is what we enjoy. Thanks again, Jeni Lou

This year was my first time and I enjoyed it so much that I will return. I did not have a horse but next time I will because it looked as though the camp riders where having a very good time.

If any one is thinking about buying it, well let me tell ya it is worth the money. I love it when someone says ya’ll do what at Clinton Arkansas and then Larry pulls out the video. We love the video. Thanks Again

Thanks for the good words! Glad you enjoyed it. We think it is the best one ever.
November 15th, 2007 at 1:55 pm
Dan and Peggy,
Just received this year’s video. We had to view it immediately. We gathered at Christy’s house, all 13 of us, raided her fridge and sat around the tv. We laughed,talked,re-ran,paused and argued all through the tape. We all believe it was the best video ever! We loved the split screen effect. Our complements to the film people and editors.
One suggestion for next year: Can you hang another speaker closer to the starting line in the bottoms. As you know our group sit along the tree line and, try as we might, we can not hear the times called. To be more specific, Randy’s microphone is clearer than the other.
We always enjoy your hospitality. Thank you for giving us so much fun year after year.
November 15th, 2007 at 10:21 pm
I’ll try to remember about the speaker, but please remind me again closer to the races next year. I’m not sure what we can do, but we’ll try to improve the sound.
I’ll pass the compliments on to Flavie–she does a great job, doesn’t she? She’s already planning on what new things she can do for next year’s tape.
Have a great Thanksgiving.

I just looked at Amanda Rhodes pictures and they are awesome. Everyone needs to take a look at what she has created. To me it is a tribute to the of Ranch and what we all love to do “Chuckwagon Racing”. Way to go Amanda

Thanks Jeni Lou for the positive comments on my pictures! I really appreciate it! There is an earlier post on here where I have added a link to my photobucket site where I have all my pictures posted… please feel free to go take a look! Thanks again! It makes me so proud that I can do things like that and it touch people like it does me! I love going to Clinton, spending time with my horses and having the fellowship that is present there! I commend Peggy and Dan for everything they do, to allow us to go play cowboys and cowgirls for a week! Thank ya’ll so much! You just don’t know how great it is to people like me, that ya’ll allow us to come and have such a wonderful time!
Forever greatful,
Amanda

I was watching a show about your event. It looks like some horses where hurt in the crashes. Are the horses injured during this event?
January 15th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Hi Tom,
We have been fortunate not to have had many serious injuries to man or beast, thank goodness! We have veternarians on staff during the event to take care of any incidents that may occur.

Hi Everybody,
As you probably know, the city of Clinton was hit hard by a tornado on Tuesday, February 5. Luckily, here at the ranch and at the feed store we had no damage at all. However, several family members and friends of ours did not fare as well. Dan’s brother, Bill’s house was completely destroyed. My dad’s house sustained considerable damage, and mine and Dan’s “adopted” mother’s house was also completely destroyed. Thankfully, all escaped with minor injuries.
We would like to thank all of our friends who have called over the past few days offering words of encouragement, places to stay, and calls of concern. We truly appreciate everything.
People from all around have come to the aid of our city–the clean up has started–by wagon race time, everything should be good as new!
Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers.

Can we be of service feeding workers, family, or anyone in need? We have an opening on Tuesday February 12th. Please contact us by phone or e-mail if we can assist. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. Bubba
February 9th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
Well, THANK YOU!!! There are several groups who are set up at the banks, churches, and insurance offices that are cooking and serving anyone who wants to stop by, so I think there is plenty to eat here. (Although not nearly as tasty as Bubba’s BBQ!)
The outpouring of help to our community is amazing. We are so fortunate to live in such a wonderful place that has such wonderful and caring neighbors.
Thanks again for the offer. We knew we picked the right BBQ people all those years ago!

Have been attending for 10 years and want to race mules up the big hill but am having trouble getting info on how to and stipulations. Can you help me? I have the mules and a wagon but need a way to get in.
Thanks
Kevin and Nancy Pillow
July 8th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
what is minimum height for mules up the big hill?
August 6th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
Well it’s only 2 more weeks away! We are soooo excited we can’t keep it together. This will be our 14th year at the -OF. We spend all ten days on the ranch, i couldn’t picture our vacation any different. I love comming down the hill and looking in the valley at the “giant dust bowl”. Most think we are crazy for being in the hot sun and dusty weather, we just love it thats all. We look so foreward to the race all year long. It ends the season for us as racers, but its a great way to end it. We have racers get hurt, as well as our beloved animals. We spend way to much on fuel, beer and feed. But as Danny Newland would say “its the greatest show on dirt!” Thanks for all that you do and the great effort that you put into it all. Thanks for letting thousands of people come stay with you for ten days. Yall are great people and can’t wait to see yall. Terry Lynne (Fast Cattle Co.& Sneakn’ Bayou)

Dan & peggy and everyone out there in National Championship Chuckwagon race land, THANK YOU ALL for a great time at the races again this year.
The main reason for this entry is that I lost a pair of “hair-on chinks” after the Bucking Bull Futurity on Monday night.
Here is a description of them: Dark dark brown and white longhorn with burgandy fringe on the bottom and white fringe at the top. Three longhorn/barbwire conchos on each leg, three stainless buckles on each leg and a stainless cart buckle in front with two small longhown/barbwire conchos there. On the inside there are two pieces of buckshot which I circled with a ball point pen. And my maker stamp in the middle of the back belt, which says: Jill Smith, Holden, MO.
I tanned the hide and made these myself and would really like to have them back if anyone has seen them or knows of their where-abouts.
I will gladly pay any shipping and then some to get them back.
Thank you for your time and see everyone next year. It’s always great to meet new people from different places.
Thank you again,
Jill Smith

An update on Joe T. Smith of the Dark Horse classic team that wrecked on Sunday afternoon. Joe T. suffered a broken right shoulder–in three places and also had hip bone fractures on his right side. He is not to put any weight on that shoulder for at least 12 weeks, which is making rehab on his hip a problem. He is at the Chenal Rehab in Little Rock, and as of now, we are not sure how long he will be there. I have been in contact with his wife Sondra, and she said Joe T. would love to hear from friends. His phone number is 501 884 7300, or if you would like to send some get-well wishes, his address is 210 McGrew Lane, Hot Springs, Arkansas 71913.
Sondra tells me that his horses are fine, and that his wagon is repairable–and he is already talking about next year! She also asked for prayers for him, and this is something we can all do for him. When I have more news, I will certainly keep everybody posted.

Hello, Peggy and Dan. I really enjoyed my very first National Chuckwagon Race in 2008. I had a blast and plan on attending every race possible in the future. I purchased a dvd of the 2008 race and was wanting to know when I should recieve it. Thanks and God Bless

Dan and Peggy… I have to say the dvd’s this year were REALLY good. Out of all the videos I have to say this was the best! I am really looking forward to next year, as always! Also is there anyway you can tell me if they are going to do the Extreme Cowboy races again for the preshow or are ya’ll going to do something new.
Thanks,
Amanda and the TNT Big mule team

Dan… I have a band that you mite be interested in booking for next year. They are called Western Underground, Chris Ledoux’s band. They have a guy singing for them and they do some of their songs and Chris’ too. His son still plays one of the two sets of drums that they have on stage. Their music would fit good with the crowd at the races.
Thanks,
Justin

I really enjoy camping and the whole atmosphere of the Clinton wagon races, however, the fee to get in (in my opinion and several others) is a little steep. Especially if you have a family that you bring with you. I think in light of the economic crisis, it would be a very wonderful and welcomed jesture if yall were to lower the camping prices this year instead of raising them, or even give discounts to campers and not just the racers. My family and I usually come for the whole week but this year we may not come at all b/c of the prices. I know more ppl would come if yall did lower your prices a bit. Just a thought……..
February 22nd, 2009 at 7:37 pm
In 2007 there were portable showers available for a price. They started at $5.00, but not many people used them. When they lowered it to $3.00, they had more customers. Last year (2008), they weren’t there at all, and were really missed. I heard several people talking about them at the 2 warm showers in Southfork. Will those showers be back in 2009? Given these tough economic times, If they were there, I would suggest a ‘package deal’ as in 2 showers for $5.00 or $3.00 each. I think that sounds fair. I would like to pass on that the folk who ran them, they cleaned them after every person, and did a GREAT job!! Nothing at all like the cold showers or the ones in Southfork. They kept them clean. Thanks and see you in August!

Hello, Peggy and Dan. I really enjoyed my very first National Chuckwagon Race in 2008. I had a blast and plan on attending every race possible in the future. (By the way this will be my husband Calvin’s 3rd time attending, made him bring me instead of his friends last year.) I loved spending time with my horses and my husband, and having the fellowship that is there! We look so forward to the race all year long, and plan on spending the whole week this year. The main reason for this entry is that last year on Friday in the middle of the night, someone rode into our camp and stole my husband’s boots with the spurs attached! We looked all Saturday for the boots, found one in the ditch about 500 yards from our camp with no spur. The boots could be replaced, but my husband had those spurs given to him by his older brother when he was 13…. (By the way we even had our lights on around our camper and trailer when they were stolen!)We just wanted everyone to keep your special items locked up, in the event that someone else might find them more special than you. This year come by and see us if you can, we will be on top of the hill, by the pond, at the Stolen Spur Camp. Lol……. Can’t wait till Labor Day week!
April 23rd, 2009 at 1:32 pm

Dan & Peggy,
I just got my 2009 dvd in, I dropped what I was doing and sat down and watched it. Wow, I honestly think this is the best DVD yet by far! They did an amazing job on it this year!
I also am sending Clif Andrus a cd copy of all the pictures I took from this past year. I posted some on the website, but I took over 1300 pictures so it’s hard to upload them all on here. If you would like to for me to, I can send you a cd as well. I think the main ones I haven’t uploaded yet are the ones of the classic races.
But I hope all is well, I look forward to seeing everyone next year!

Oh, I have one more question for Dan. This was the first year I have ever gone down and played in the river on the horses. It was 7 of us down there and a lady got mad and was real rude to us for being down there and swimming our horses. I am probably the oldest out of the bunch and am 27 and she was treating us like kids saying she was going to go get Dan, that we were NOT allowed to swim our horses down in the river and we needed to leave. I checked in the book, it didn’t say anything about it and stopped up at the check in and asked and they said they had never heard of anyone not being allowed to ride or swim in the creek. I just wanted to be clear on what we could and couldn’t do on your ranch. I don’t want to cause any trouble and want to show ya’ll and everyone else on the ranch respect, but I just thought she could have approached us in a lot better manner than what she did. I guess what I am needing is to have your approval, have this ever happen again, or just the knowledge that you would rather us not ride or swim in the creek.
